The ‘Boarding Bus’ heads to Gloworm

Think of the term ‘Boarding School’ and you probably think of pokey hallways and rows of beds.

Well think again!

If you’re a boarder today, you’re probably far more likely to experience light airy spaces, with all the comforts of modern living and the latest technology.

And at Gloworm, you’ll get the chance to find out. The ‘Boarding Bus’ is kitted out as a typical boarding house room, with built-in bed, desk and refrigerator, shelf and storage space and a slick flat-screen TV.

“Boarding in 2017 is a very different experience, to that of 30 years ago” says Leila Gold, Marketing Director at Worksop College and Ranby House, one of the festival’s main sponsors.

“Parents want flexibility and for many families, boarding just a couple of nights a week means cutting down on the school run or accommodating evening plans. Plus, for the boarders, it means a sleepover with their friends!

Our most recent boarding facility, Mason House has been nominated for a number of architectural awards and is more reminiscent of exclusive student accommodation than what many people might perceive a boarding house to be like.”

“We hope lots of festival-goers will take the opportunity to come and take a look round the Boarding Bus and have a chat to our team about the different options available at our school.”

Worksop College and Ranby House School is one of the County’s leading independent schools – educating boys and girls aged 3 to 18 and set in 400 acres of beautiful North Notts countryside.

Award-winning toy brand, Little Brian, is to exhibit at the ever popular Gloworm Festival.

The festival, which takes place over August, 19th and 20th, at Clumber Park in Nottingham, will see the brand exhibit its impressive range of Paint Sticks.

As well as fun and games, children will be able to try their hand at using the Classic, Metallic and Day Glow Paint Sticks on the Little Brian stand.

Lara Alcock, sales and marketing Director at Little Brian said: “We’re delighted to be exhibiting at Gloworm Festival 2017, make sure you pop by to say Hi and have some fun on our stand too; and who knows, there may be a chance to win some of our fabulous products that weekend too!”

“The reports we received on the 2016 festival were outstanding so we thought we had to be at the 2017 festival. We’re extremely excited to see the thousands of people that attend, the atmosphere is supposed to be superb and we can’t wait to hit the road and set up our stand!”

“Our products are suitable for children of all ages and families so the Gloworm Festival is an ideal fit and I am sure the whole festival itself will prove to be a huge success.”

Coming on the toy scene just last year, Little Brian’s Paint Sticks provide a clean and convenient way to paint with no need for brushes or water or the mess that comes with it. The solid Paint Sticks twist up and down like a glue stick, and allow vivid colours to be transferred directly onto surfaces like canvas, wood, paper, card and even glass drying within minutes of use.

The launch year proved to be an extremely successful one for Little Brian, scooping three awards. Paint Sticks was the winner of the Creative Play category in the Practical Pre-School Awards, gold award winner in the Creative Play category at the Primary Teacher Update Awards and winner of the Painting and Colouring Materials category for four to seven year olds at the Creative Play Awards; to which the brand fought off tough competition from popular brand Crayola and Paint Sticks were also crowned The Independent’s Best Buy for four-year-olds.

This year has certainly started on a high for Little Brian with Paint Sticks being shortlisted as finalists in the Education Resources Awards and being awarded Gold in the Arts and Crafts category at the Bizzie Baby Awards.

Pregnancy Twinning - Motherhood without borders

Pregnancy Twinning is your way to give another woman the maternal care that every mum deserves.

As the poorest country in the world, women from Malawi are seventy times more likely to die in childbirth than their British counterparts, not because they are any less good at giving birth but because unlike us, they do not have automatic access to basic healthcare.

Pregnancy Twinning Ambassador Marina Fogle explains "This scheme isn’t about building shiny new hospitals or giving 3D scans to expectant mothers, it’s about giving a very basic level of care which makes a profound difference.  £42 pays for a Mother Buddy to make eight visits and support an often isolated and vulnerable woman during her pregnancy.  The Mother Buddy will ensure she is taking appropriate medication, visiting a hospital if necessary and making a plan about getting her to a clinic to deliver her baby.  And this seemingly simple process really does save lives."

Say Hello to the new additions to this popular range, developed with Baby Sensory

The “Say Hello” toy range has had a fantastic first year, and there are three new additions launching at Harrogate.

“Say Hello” To Tummy Time is the perfect introduction to tummy time for a new baby. This engaging, comfortable mat has crinkles, a peek-a-boo mirror, teether, and a musical star to discover, and comes with a soft moon-shaped cushion to help them feel supported as they practise this beneficial activity every day.

The Starry Sky Cot Mobile plays the ‘Say Hello To The Sun’ tune that starts every Baby Sensory class. With its soft music and gently rotating toys, it will help to soothe baby to sleep. The lyrics are included in the box, so parents can sing along!

Soft, familiar objects can help babies soothe themselves to sleep, or bring reassurance when they’re somewhere new. Made with soft, comforting fabrics, the “Say Hello” Dream Comforter invites baby to hold and snuggle it, while the sleepy moon and star faces hiding on each side teach them that objects still exist even when they cannot be seen.

The “Say Hello” range of intelligent toys was developed by East Coast Nursery with Dr Lin Day of Baby Sensory, and based on over 25 years of research into the way babies learn and develop. With her input at every stage, the range has been expertly designed to stimulate thinking, feeling and learning, and encourage healthy social-emotional development in babies and toddlers. The toys feature colours and patterns that have been carefully chosen for their appeal to young babies.

Baby Sensory was the first baby programme to offer a complete approach to learning and development from birth to 13 months. Attended by first-time and second-time parents, the award-winning classes now attract over 25,000 parents annually.

Pipity - Bringing Play Back to Life

I spent a couple of years developing the Pipity range and then launched it last May.  As a Mum of 3 there were a number or reasons that inspired to create Pipity, the key one’s probably being:

1. Years of broken pencils and felt tip pens staining and littering the bottom of my handbag, along with crumpled creations resulting in disgruntled kids.

2. Two of my kids love making and creating and I struggled to find great presents with any longevity to celebrate and inspire their creative flare.

3. Feeling uneasy about the growing role of technology in my children’s lives, I wanted to find a fun alternative solution that would help me balance screen use.  Something that would ignite their imaginations, be easy to take out-and-about, that would neatly sidestep the perennial ‘screen negotiation’ and satisfy the cries of “I’m bored”!

I design all Pipity products and packaging at my kitchen table in Devon, and do all the artwork for the Pipity books and marketing.  To date I am running it all myself (but am looking forward to a time I can get a bit of help in).  Juggling it round family life keeps me very busy and out of trouble!

Pipity is ready to grab and go, it’s lightweight, compact, practical and easy for kids to use in those ‘I’m bored’ situations…cafes, restaurants, waiting rooms, cars, planes or trains, or when away from their toys at home!

Over the last year the Pipity Activity case has won the following awards:

- Right Start Best Toy Award 2016 in their Arts and Crafts category

- Loved by Parents Gold Award 2016 in their best Stimulative Toy category

- Junior Design Silver Award 2016 in their best travel product category

There is more information about Pipity on my website:  All sales are fulfilled by Amazon.

Revolution in car seat safe travel wear – ‘Huggle Me Close’ Ltd

Huggle Me Close Ltd picked up a Silver Award at the Practical Preschool and Childcare Awards. The panel recognised the importance of the unique, revolutionary system developed by the Huggle Me Close team, that when incorporated into snowsuits, coats and travel sleeping bags enables safe use in a car seat.

The awareness of the danger of children and babies wearing padded clothing in a car seat is rapidly growing. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) states that children should not be put in a car seat whilst wearing thick clothing as this increases the risk of serious injury when the straps become slack as the fabric can compresses in the event of an accident.

Huggle Me Close's unique, patented technology is the only way to avoid the dilemma of warmth over safety in a car seat whilst enabling parents and carers to transfer their child from the house or buggy to the car without having to remove their outer clothing.

If you are interested in licensing this revolutionary, car-safe technology, enabling your brand to incorporate it into your range of snowsuits, coats and travel sleeping bags.

JoJo Maman Bébé to open boutique in West Bridgford

JoJo Maman Bébé, the UK’s leading mother and baby boutique brand, will open a gorgeous new store at 20 Tudor Square, West Bridgford on Saturday 4th March. The store will stock the full range of quirky and imaginative baby and children’s collections and nursery products, gifts and toys.

There will be lots of exciting activity to celebrate the opening of the new shop, JoJo will be giving away goody bags to the first 100 customers who spend in store on the day and will also be giving away hop-a-long bunny balloons throughout the opening weekend.

Loyal local mail order customers of this multi-channel brand have been campaigning for a JoJo store in the area. Finally, after searching for the ideal location, JoJo is set to become a destination shop for parents and grandparents from across the area, as well as the place to go for gorgeous new baby gifts. Laura Tenison, Founder and MD of JoJo adds “West Bridgford has long been on our agenda after receiving lots of emails from young families wanting us to open, but finding the right location took time.”

The good news is already gathering momentum via social networking channels. Laura explains “Our multi-channel retail strategy also helps other independent businesses in the area, even if they are of a competitive nature. Just before opening, we will email local customers and incentivise them to visit the town and our store.  They are likely to spend time with neighbouring retailers and cafés as well as our new store, so it’s a win-win situation for all of us.”

JoJo was launched 24 years ago as a specialist maternity and baby store from a tiny kitchen-table business with the stock held in a shed belonging to Laura’s parents in Wales.  The company has grown organically and now has over 80 stores as well as trade sales to 50 countries.  Despite this phenomenal growth, JoJo continues to operate with small company values and places a huge emphasis on great quality, fantastic customer service, environmental sustainability and loyalty to all involved.

According to the NHS, obesity is expected to rise 73% resulting in half of us becoming significantly overweight by 2030; an unhealthy outcome that stems from learned behaviour in the home. A new business, ChewyMoon, is taking a small step towards changing this course.

ChewyMoon is a subscription snack box for kids between 4-10 years old, and customised according to a child’s age and activity. Their agenda is simple – to be your child’s first snack brand that makes it as much fun to learn about nutrition as it is to eat the snack. Healthy snacks are rarely engaging and engaging snacks are rarely healthy. Engagement, comprising taste, mouth-feel and visual-appeal often wins, while health takes a backseat.

“Parents need a radically different way of getting their children to eat healthy”, says co-founder Verena Klanner, a registered nutritionist with a background in child nutrition. “The best marketers in the world are junk food and drink companies, who are preying on kids with cleverly packaged look and feel. As parents, before introducing healthy snacks to children, we ought to introduce the ‘idea' of healthy, so that they are stimulated to demand for it from parents. You need to understand and speak to kids about nutrition in their lingo. The best part about Chewymoon is children learn about nutrition from an ape in a spacesuit rather than an adult droning on about healthy eating.”

Chewymoon is a four-dimensional land from where the ‘Moonas’, a bunch of crazy critters, travelled to earth to save kids from Professor Wolfberg, the ambassador for the junk food industry. Illustrated comics, collectable cards and toys depict the fight between the good and the bad.

Ingredients are sourced from select producers with a reputation for developing healthy foods. New snacks are then sampled and approved with groups of kids to measure their engagement. For £4.93 subscribers get five all natural snacks, together with a comic, collectable battle card and totem toy delivered through their letterbox. Customers can choose to receive a random selection of five snacks every week or choose from over 40 snacks that includes fruit-smoothie chips, pure fruit shapes, baked cheese, smoky coconut flakes to name a few. The snacks cover the entire spectrum – sweet and savoury, natural and baked, exotic and close-to-home.

“The snack box is designed to capture kids’ imaginations, creating a formative impact on kids’ eating habits for later life”, says Laurence Thomas, Co-Founder of Chewymoon. “Suddenly your kids will love something that’s good for them. Kids never love something that’s good for them – they are kids!”, says Laurence.

Illustrator Katie Abey Comes to Gloworm!

Katie Abey is an illustrator human who lives in a teeny hobbit-like house in Derbyshire with a cat, a hedgehog and a husband. Her work provides illustrative doses of happiness and motivation along with a little dash of sarcasm.

She is a big lover of animals and her work often features creatures looking slightly nonchalant, perturbed or even a bit deranged. She likes using a lot of colour in her work and this love of colour is reflected in her brightly coloured studio space and her hair, which frequently changes colour to match its surroundings.

Katie’s ideas and strange sense of humour perfectly suit the field of children’s publishing and she has worked with Bloomsbury, Bonnier, Stripes and many more great children’s publishers. She has also produced work for the stationery and greeting card industries and her illustrations have graced stores such as WHSmiths, Urban Outfitters, Paperchase and Scribbler.

When Katie is not drawing awkward cats and llamas she enjoys reading, music and referring to herself in the third person.
